In most Anaheim residential zones, a fence, wall or hedge inside the required front setback can be at most 3 feet tall. In side and rear setbacks, the city table allows up to 8 feet, and anything over 7 feet needs a building permit. As of November 2026, these limits are in Anaheim Municipal Code section 18.46.110.
What are the main limits?
| Where | Limit |
|---|---|
| Required front setback, residential | 3 feet |
| Street-side setback on a reverse corner lot | 3 feet |
| Side and rear setbacks | Up to 8 feet |
| Fence or wall over 7 feet | Building permit required |
| Pilasters and light fixtures in the front setback | Up to 4 feet |

Are there exceptions for hillside lots?
Yes. In the RH-1 and RH-2 hillside zones, the code allows open-work metal fencing up to 6 feet in the front setback, with a cap on how much of it is solid and approval from the city's traffic and transportation manager.
What about homes that back onto a busy street?
Single-family lots that back onto an arterial, take access from an alley and have no driveway on the arterial can apply for a wall up to 6 feet through administrative review. That provision does not apply in the RM-1 zone.
Can hedges be taller?
Hedges over 3 feet are allowed on single- and multiple-family lots, but not within 7 feet of the public right-of-way without city approval.
Corner lots and driveways
Height near a corner or driveway is also about sight lines. Expect the city to look closely at anything that could block a driver's view.
