Do I need to call 811 before installing a fence in Anaheim?

Updated November 2026

Yes. Digging post holes is excavation, and California law requires the excavator to notify the regional notification center at least two working days, and no more than 14 calendar days, before digging. In Southern California that center is Underground Service Alert of Southern California, known as DigAlert, reached by calling 811 or online. It is free.

Why does a fence need a ticket?

Post holes often go 2 to 3 feet deep, which is deep enough to reach gas service lines, electric, water, sewer laterals and communication cables. Older lots can have lines that nobody remembers.

How does it work?

  1. Mark the dig area in white paint or flags along the planned fence line.
  2. Contact DigAlert by calling 811 or filing online, at least two working days ahead.
  3. Wait for the marks. Utilities paint or flag their lines, or report that nothing is there.
  4. Hand dig near the marks instead of using a power auger.

How long is a ticket good for?

Under California Government Code section 4216.2, a ticket is valid for 28 days from issue, and it must be renewed if the work runs longer.

Are my private lines marked?

Usually not. Utilities mark what they own, which typically ends at the meter. Sprinkler lines, garden lighting and feeds to a detached garage or backyard unit are usually yours to locate.

Who handles it on our jobs?

We open the DigAlert ticket, mark the line and wait for the utility marks before the first post hole on every Anaheim job.
